Online shopping is as popular as ever - here's how to make sure the purchase is what one expects.

The following scenario has happened to nearly everyone who shops online: the coveted bag or shoe finally arrives in the mail. Anticipation rises while opening the box only to discover that said accessory is not at all how it looked on the screen. Whether the color is off, the fit is strange or a major detail was overlooked, it’s always a shame to have to return an item.

Such inconveniences, however, don’t seem to discourage online shoppers. Websites that sell shoes and bags are increasingly popular, especially as eager shoppers search for the best deal. But how to make the online shopping experience as close to browsing in a store as possible? Follow this guide:

Color and Style

Even the best photographs can sometimes be deceiving, albeit unintentionally, when it comes to color and style of a bag or shoe. It could be the website; it could be one’s own computer monitor. In any case, one wants to be sure exactly what color they are purchasing.

Most websites will name the color along with the photograph. Many will also have small color “swatches”, particularly when an item is available in more than one color. This can be helpful not just to see the different choices, but to compare what the site deems “sea green” versus “blue-green.”

The style or the bag or shoe should also be clearly stated. Bags come in so many forms – hobo, satchel, tote, clutch. The shoe description should be carefully read as well, especially since terms such as “flat” and “skimmer” are sometimes used interchangeably. It’s best to read the description as well as view the photograph.

Multiple Viewpoints

It’s a good idea to take advantage of websites that offer multiple viewpoints of their items. Bags should be looked at from the front, back, side and inside (see more about the inside of bags below.) The zoom button can be used to get a better sense of the fabric as well as details such as hardware and stitching.

This is the same for shoes -- multiple viewpoints not only include the top of the shoe, but the sole as well. Zooming in closer can also give a shopper a better view of the item.

Don’t Forget Details

Often websites neglect to show the inside of a bag, which can be a big selling point or turnoff to a buyer. It should be clearly stated whether the bag is lined, as well as the lining fabric. A picture is crucial as well – some bag lovers prefer wild, bright patterns inside of their bags while others want a more subdued look.

Read Terms Carefully

A description should be read quite carefully. Sometimes a bag or shoe will be described as “patent” and that doesn’t necessarily mean patent leather. Additionally, a shoe with a “driving sole” can either have a pebble bottom or simply a rubber bottom. If any of these things are unclear, websites usually have an e-mail address specifically meant for questions regarding the merchandise – which can save disappointment and a return label in the end.
