Buying great shoes doesn’t have to be expensive and affordable shoes don’t have to look cheap. Try some of these ideas for buying discount shoes.

While many of us may have Carrie Bradshaw's penchant for expensive footwear, not all of us can afford dozens of designer shoes. Whether you're shopping on a budget, or just enjoy getting a good bargain, these shopping options offer great ways to get discount shoes that are stylish, fun, and flattering.

1. Discount Shoes at End-of-Season Sales

Check out the shoe section of your local department store for great end-of-season bargains on discount shoes. Many stores clear out seasonal shoes or items left over from the previous season at cut-rate prices. February, August, and December are often great months for clearance sales at a number of major retailers. For example, I purchased a pair of Steve Madden moccasins for only $4.50 at a Dillard's 75%-off clearance sale last year. Check often or ask salespeople for tips on the best times to shop.

2. Check Out Local Retailers for Discount Shoes

Many retailers regularly offer great deals and discounts on shoes. Payless ShoeSource is a reliable place to buy discount shoes that are fashionable and fun. If your looking for a quick, easy, and inexpensive way to update your wardrobe, browse the selection at Payless to find many items priced under $20.

Target is another great place to find cute, affordable shoes. Target stores typically offer a great selection of many current trends and decent size availability. This is an excellent place to pick up discount shoes for children as well.

3. Try Thrift Stores and Garage Sales

If you don't mind previously owned items, thrift stores and garage sales are always a good source of affordable footwear. Even better, you can usually barter with the seller over the price of the item. Look for shoes that are current, show few signs of wear, and are in excellent condition. Thrift stores and garage sales are good places to shop for kid's shoes, since many sellers are parting with the shoes because their own children have outgrown them so quickly.

4. Watch eBay for Discount Shoes

Vintage shoe lovers may want to look at the selection of shoes on eBay for great deals. The greatest advantage of shopping on eBay is that you will find a constantly changing collection of current, designer, and vintage shoes. Shop wisely and always investigate the seller before bidding on an item.

5. Summary

Discount shoes don't have to look cheap. Careful attention to sales can slash the cost of shoes, while shopping at reliably affordable retailers can also make your purchases more affordable. Finding stylish discount shoes may take some time and effort, but it may be well worth the rewards when you are watching your budget.
