Here's a summary of the main ready-to-wear trends that will be influencing your fall and winter wardrobe:

  • Plaid is everywhere in strong blues, greens, purples and monochromes. This powerful print is favored by designers like Ralph Lauren, D & G and Marc Jacobs, with plaid print dresses, long skirts, pussy-bow blouses, jackets and coats. Ralph Lauren's skinny-leg pant suits in sizzling reds, with structured shoulders embody many of the trends for the fall season.
  • Slouchy, elegant and relaxed is a look that comes from Marc Jacobs, Proenza Schouler and Peter Som. Be a total slouch in low-slung wide-legged slouchy pants, in gorgeous grays and neutrals.
  • Fall Florals come in rich deep colors, purples, reds, lilacy blues and olive and mossy greens. Michael Kors, Anna Sui, Oscar De La Renta, Diana von Furstenberg and Derek Lam prove that spring does not have the monopoly on blooms. From DVF’s maxis to Oscar de La Renta’s swinging skirts to Anna Sui’s Miss Haversham-style dresses.
  • Bohemian prints get a makeover, from flower child to Russian Folklore to Native Indian-influenced prints. Add a touch of Carolina Herrera classic florals and Oscar de La Renta dreamy prints.
  • Gothic Glamour influenced by Victoriana and Rock chic, in rich black velvets, chiffons, satins and furs. From Zac Posen’s romantic maxis to Derek Lam’s dresses from the dark-side. Giles and Luella's gothic looks are softened with romantic chiffon layers, lace and ruffles.
  • Man-style Dressing with masculine tailoring and androgynous silhouettes are here for another season, with contrasting textures and cuts adding interest this fall. Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs, Tommy Hilfiger, Dolce & Gabbana feature understated colors and traditional herringbones and tweeds. Pewter and charcoal grays mesh with black on black. Sleek and lean styling from the likes of Givenchy and Calvin Klein.
  • Sleeves are a main feature of fall, either with or without them. Volumned-up and architecturally sculptured, or none at all. From the sleeveless jackets of 3.1 Phillip Lim to BCBG sleeveless coats, to Calvin Klein’s sleeveless masculine blazers. Even Diana von Furstenberg has got in on the act with a cherry-red long sleeveless waistcoat.
  • Medieval Mania of Camelot-inspired robes, tunics, capes and hoods, influence Marc Jacobs, Giles and Stella McCartney, along with chain mail-inspired accessories and dresses, such as Julien McDonald’s armor-like sequined gown.
  • Ombré dip-dye continues its fashion moment, transcending from summer into fall with soft color-bleeding in skirts, dresses, tops and pant suits from Behnaz Sarafpour, Costello Tagliapietra and Thakoon. Catch Hervé Léger’s sexy body cont dress in gradients of grays and purples and Oscar de La Renta’s elegant swing skirts.

Other influences from the world's runways include military-inspired looks from Milan , luxe sportswear, and a passion for paisley and lace.
