Although lace-covered handbags and footwear are nothing new, old-fashioned lace techniques have been revived and updated, with modern shaping and detailing; a far cry from the connotations of old. Much of the lace for Fall 2008 is big and bold, and has been toughend up, giving it a rope-like texture; with chunky detailing on handles and heels.
Lace has been hailed as the fabric of the future. According to Miuccia Prada lace has all the qualities that our modern (fashion) world is looking for. This season you'll find lace adorning everything from purses to coats.
Lace Shoes and Boots
Fashion footwear is having a romantic moment with lace ankle boots from Robert Cavalli, peep-toe pumps from Dolce & Gabbana and Christian Louboutin. Prada proudly wears the lace mantel for Fall 2008, as their fall collection has been touted by style.com, in their Prada fall 2008 fashion review as “doing for the lace industry what Nicolas Ghesquière did for flower printers last season, — send the mills into frantic overdrive." A two-piece lace shoe by Rene Caovilla reminds us this season of the austere Victorian age, where fine lace adorned wealthy women. There are also lace versions of the season's ankle boot, including popular high street brands like Nine West.
Lace Handbags and Purses
Romantic lace adorns delicate purses, giving an antique vintage feel. Ultra-femine and extremely versatile this season sees lace on anything from satchels to clutch purses. No longer just an evening accessory, lace bags come in all shapes and sizes for day and businesswear. From Prada’s chain-link-handled black lace and napa leather bag to the larger Pizzo S Satchel (available from Saks.) Christian Louboutin offers a nude-colored satchel with a gold double-chain handle, and Chanel offers an elegant satin and lace metallic clutch. More colorful is Valentino’s lovely lavender lace Vanite bag, which represents on of the hottest colors of the season.
Avoid a head-to-toe look in lace. If wearing lace accessories then keep outfits plain and unfussy like a simple shift.
The History of Lace
There are mentions of lace as far back as biblical times as it is referred to in the Book of Exodus, 28:28, King James Bible. Its use became widespread from the 16th century, when it was hailed as a fabric that would replace embroidery, to be used in high fashion garments of the time.. A cottage industry of lace making spread throughout Europe, chiefly in countries like Belgium, Italy, Spain, Malta and Ireland. Until the 19th century this openwork fabric was created by hand, but when a lace making machine was invented, this competed with more expensive handmade lace, and made the fabric available to the masses.
Despite its modern make-over, in today’s world lace continues epitomizes elegance and sophistication. In the words of Coco Chanel, April 29, 1939, featured in “Lace Quotes”at lace.lacefairy.com, "I consider lace to be one of the prettiest imitations ever made of the fantasy of nature; lace always evokes for me those incomparable designs which the branches and leaves of trees embroider across the sky, and I do not think that any invention of the human spirit could have a more graceful or precise origin."
