One of the most common, and easiest, ways for a closet to become cluttered is to have a jumbled pile of shoes on the floor. Completely empty the closet of all shoes.

Organize shoes together and separate by type or purpose.
At this time, the pile should only contain the shoes that will go back into the closet. However, before the shoes are placed back into the shoe storage area, they need to be paired and then organized by type or purpose. Therefore, first pair-up all the shoes and then separate the pile by season (cold or warm weather) or by type (sandal, boot, sneaker, and so on). From there, when the shoes are placed back into the closet, they can be further organized by color.
